Pomeranian Breed Information

The Pomeranian is a descendant of the Spitz family of sled dogs used in Iceland (hence its very thick and fluffy coat that protects it from the cold). The Pomeranian was named after the historical region of Pomerania (which is now present day Germany and Poland), where it was bred down to its current small size. In its larger form, the Pomeranian weighed as much as 30 lbs and served as a sheep herder. Through selective breeding, the Pomeranian was eventually bred down to an average of around 20 lbs. The Pomeranian was first brought to England by Queen Charlotte in the late 17th century but didn’t become popular until 1888 when Queen Victoria returned home from Italy with an unusually small one named Marco. Little Marco grew to just 12 lbs as an adult dog. At the time, Queen Victoria was a very popular monarch, and so the popularity of the Pomeranian grew as well – along with a desire for the smaller size. Queen Victoria became such a fancier of the breed that in the late 1800’s, she established her very own kennel for Pomeranian breeding. Selective breeding of the Pomeranian continued, and over the years, the size of the breed has decreased to a mere 7 lbs or less. Pomeranians known as “teacups” or simply, “Teacup Pomeranians,” are purebred Pomeranians that fall into an even smaller size category of just 4 lbs or less at adult weight. Other famous owners of Pomeranians in history include Marie Antoinette, Mozart, Michelangelo, and Martin Luther.

Today, the Pomeranian is a coveted companion and beautiful show dog. The Pomeranian is lively, intelligent, and eager to learn. They are bold, willful, and loyal to their owners. Most Pomeranians tend to be leery of strangers, and will bark excessively at people they’ve never met before. Pomeranians typically get along well with other animals. They are very independent, alert, curious, and proud. They are generally docile, even-tempered, and affectionate, but if spoiled or improperly trained, the Pomeranian may become demanding.
